Challenge:
We represented a leading manufacturer of automotive parts in their efforts to secure a new, more-competitive labor contract with the United Auto Workers (UAW).
Strategy/Implementation:
Our work included a robust internal, community, and media relations campaign. We developed clear, concise messages about the business and economic rationale for a new labor contract. We trained all front-line supervisors (many of whom were once represented by the union) on how to communicate effectively with hourly employees about this important issue. We created a bi-weekly employee newsletter and other internal communication vehicles to educate employees about the company’s competitive situation. Lastly, we proactively engaged the media and the community in dialogue about the company’s need for change.
Results:
After community and media support began to shift the company’s way, the UAW-represented employees voted to accept the
company’s final contract offer.
