RP was engaged by this regional hospital as it entered into contentious labor negotiations with the union that represented 2,300 of its nursing caregivers. Our team was tasked with helping the hospital reach a favorable collective bargaining agreement and avoiding a disruptive strike. The union involved had recently led aggressive “attack” campaigns against other hospitals, including work stoppages. RP led a proactive and thorough communications campaign from the start of negotiations designed to position the hospital as the trusted source of information on the contract talks.
This campaign included a dynamic bargaining website for Caregivers to consult, training for supervisors to equip them as trusted communicators, detailed communications following every bargaining session, and engagement of community influencers. The campaign included a series of fact-based communications (flyers, infographics, etc.) around issues of greatest importance to caregivers, such as pay/benefits, nurse-to-patient staffing ratios and safety. After four months of bargaining, our efforts helped the hospital successfully secure a favorable three-year contract without a strike and with very minimal media/public attention.
